Praise for The Extraordinary Gifts

I originally bought this book because it is written by a professor of mine at the time; however, I think this book is a crucial read for anyone who wants to learn about the struggles of living with a chronic illness. I am not close with anyone with a chronic illness, nor do I have one, so I found this book to be extremely eye opening!
Not only is the book an incredible read for anyone with an open mind, but the author herself is a phenomenal human being who is so passionate about what she does and what she advocates for. While she may be lucky enough to have a position in academia; as I learned from the author herself, being a woman with a chronic illness in academia especially is not easy. She has had to fight for everything she has, when in reality, she should not have had to fight harder than anyone else for what she has in her life.
Whether you are interested in the field of disability studies or not, I highly recommend this book to anyone even slightly interested in the premise of it!

The Extraordinary Gifts: My Life with a Chronic Illness is an outstanding page turner! Wideman-Johnston shares a compelling story of her journey to acceptance of a life with a chronic illness in a way that is inspiring. The balance of chronicling devastating health challenges and sound research about living with a chronic illness makes this book both engaging and informative. People who work or interact with people would benefit from learning from this captivating narrative about a series of traumatic experiences. Especially critical, is the reflection that it provokes about how professionals in the medical and educational community interact and respond to individuals with undiagnosed or complex health issues. I'd highly recommend that you get this enthralling book.

This book is both heartfelt and relatable to anyone and everyone. Whether they themselves live with a chronic illness, know someone who does, or just want to read an inspiring book.
The way the author tells her story resonated with me. It’s was as if I could feel her pain and rode the rollercoaster ride right along with her.
Reading this book raised many questions in my own life about staying positive, putting myself out there and living life to the fullest no matter the circumstances.
This book is both beautiful and inspirational.
